Branding again

It always cracks me up when I see brands over-reaching themselves.

Spotted in the shopfront window of Wellywood's Adidas store:

"Celebrate orginality"

With Adidas?

So buy Adidas and you can be original like the other 50 trillion people who buy Adidas. Clearly there is still plenty of money to be made from scraping the bottom of the barrel.

That is exactly what I thought when I saw the sign.

But then I thought it might be part of a new strategy which involves setting prices so high that only a few people can afford adidas goods and thereby, by virtue of there wealth, purchase some type of individuality.

Then I thought about it again and realised they were just being silly

Hmm. Adidas as the luxury good of footwear?

Somehow the T-shirt with "My other shoes are Adidas" doesn't quite cut it.

Isn't it a pun on Adidas' 'Original' line of clothing? Intended to signify that it's a classic look done with a unique, modern feel? I guess Adidas can be original without their customers being original.

ruaparaha - yes, I believe it is a play on their "Original" line. But the change in grammatical form from the adjective to the noun attempts to introduce an additional concept in the message which doesn't sit well - hence my assessment of it as over-reaching.
